Painting for me is a necessity, alongside my passion for objects, textiles and photography. The historical and social significance of the items I select, play an important role in expressing how traces of our past process a narrative and transience- a journey from one recipient to another; suggesting a fluidity of meaning to an object or fragment, that is not static, but evolving.

My ideas start from an object or textile, but it is through deconstruction, abstraction exaggeration and minimising, that I am able to provoke questions, inviting the viewer to see, in some cases only a fragment or trace of the subject matter.

My sculptural works involve swathes of canvas, dripping with coloured medium, often hung in homage to an old master painting.

The concepts I have, involve the reflections of relationships that we cherish and the narratives we share, presenting a powerful reminder of our associations we all share now, and in past history.

Projects

sculptural painting

Using a mix of traditional and modern techniques. My paintings capture an essence of a time or place.

drawings

Experimenting with mark making has always been a passion. Graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, my depictions of nature and caricature illustrations of everyday life, inspire and motivate my concepts further.

Unique Compositions

Remnants and objects, paintings that hold narrative and enforce emotion.

photography

Traces of the past. Photographic images of fragmented objects and textiles, gone but not forgotten.

Project; ‘Motherhood and the apron‘
carolmaddisonart

This example of an exaggerated apron hanging seamlessly, as if suspended from a domestic washing line, resembles an un -stretched canvas unfinished and unresolved. From beginning to end this sculptural canvas encrusted with trails of vibrant ink and enamels, descends autonomously, like vestiges from a painters easel.

My motivation for this work stems from an ingrained memory of myself clutching at mother’s apron whilst baking in the kitchen.

This work is provocative, enticing the viewer to question its formal qualities, whilst engaging in a deeper level of understanding of empathy and the ‘lesser narratives’.

Faux Naif Painting.
Often Folk Art interpretations convey simplistic and idiosyncratic themes in life. It is unique in that it is decorative and highly creative, appertaining to a romanticised way of portrayal.
